We checked out this morning and headed down the New England for Uralla, about 120kms away. The weather was overcast, some drizzle and cold.
We came through Armidale and stopped there for lunch. Went looking for De La Salle College - where Dad went for a couple of years, not that he attended much by the sounds of it. Couldn't find the college and as we were walking back to the car aft lunch Chris asked a guy who was walking near to us if he knew it. Evidently he was an ex student, leaving in 1972, he said that the boys and girls schools had amalgamated in 1975 and the school was renamed to O'Connor Catholic School and he gave us directions.
We found the school, very impressive gates with an older looking building at the back.
We made another stop on the way through to take a look at Thunderbolt's Cave, we were able to drive most of the way through the bush and then a short downhill walk to the actual cave. No idea of the history of the cave or the accuraxy of it being Thunderbolt's.
We continued onto Uralla and detoured to the old cemetery to see Thunderbolt's grave, again there is some controversy about whether Thunderbolt is in the grave or not.
It was a very cold afternoon, so once we checked into our cabin we didn't venture out again.
