Thursday 21th March
We had a really terrific time at the Tahune Airwalk. We drove up the Hartz Mountain Range in drizzle and light fog that got heavier and heavier the higher up we went, the fog and mist was just rolling. When we pulled into the car park we put on our wet weather gear and prepared ourselves for a very wet walk.
After paying our money and going out into the mist we were surprised that the rain had cleared and we could see the mist just rolling by and eventually it also cleared into a lovely fine "few hours". Ended up that we were sweltering in our raingear and had to take it off plus take off our jumpers etc, what a change in temperature.
The area is advertised as "Walk among the giants of the forest" and that is very true, these are the tallest flowering plants int he world. The airwalk is above the forestr canopy and gives a great view of the trees and of the view of the Huon and Picton Rivers. The Airwalk is very impressive and is amongst the tree tops and over the Huon River and Picton River. (Similar to the treetops walk in the Kari forest.)
We did the Huon pine walk along the river bank, the Swinging bridges, which were a lot of fun - well for me anyway - and the Huon track to the ruins of the house occupied by a police constable. Quite a spectacular day, and towards the end we watched the mist roll back in and gradually put our jumpers back on. We had a late lunch there and then did the last walk amongst the old Huon Pines.
We drove back through Geeveston where we stopped to pick up some supplies for our dinner.
We had thought that we might catch up with Heather on Friday but it was just pouring with rain in the morning so we said our goodbyes on the phone. They have been great with giving us ideas of where to go and what to see and really good fun overall.
We ended up going on a nice drive, the weather cleared by about 2pm and that is the time we got to Woodbridge where Chris remembered he had had a conference dinner about 20 years ago. It was the Woodbridge Hotel then but evidently it burnt down about 10 years ago and replaced with the Peppermint Bay Restaurant which according to the booklet is world renowned. Anyway the food and the service was excellent. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the view over the bay and then walked down to the wharf where the boat from Hobart docks.
